Barrett Heating and Cooling was originally founded in 1896 by James J. Barrett in downtown Alton as a tin shop specializing in metal roofs, metal ceilings, and guttering. As times and lifestyles have changed, so has the company, adding coal-fired, central heating systems, and ductwork installations to the list of services offered.
In 1954 John Barrett took over control of the company, then called Barrett Sheet Metal, and added central air conditioning to the line of services offered.
In 1981 the company was incorporated as Barrett Heating and Cooling and the fourth generation of family owners took over the operation.
Today Barrett Heating and Cooling offer a wide range of products and services including gas, oil, and electric furnaces, central air conditioning, geothermal, heat pumps, in-floor heating, indoor air quality filtration, duct cleaning, and whole-house automatic standby generators.
The company has been located in downtown Alton for over 120 years.
