Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center to Host Free Youth Cardiac Screenings July 18
Event in collaboration with MCORE Foundation will offer free ECGs and limited echocardiograms for youth ages 12 to 22.
ST. LOUIS — The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center, in collaboration with MCORE Foundation, will host a free cardiac screening event July 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for youth ages 12–22. This initiative aims to raise awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and provide potentially life-saving preventive screenings to identify undetected heart conditions.

Participants will receive non-invasive electrocardiograms (ECGs) and limited echocardiograms performed by registered sonographers and reviewed by pediatric cardiologists. Screening results will be securely stored in each participant’s account and can be shared with their healthcare provider for follow- up care if needed.
SCA is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. While it can be fatal if not treated immediately, early detection through preventive cardiac screening remains one of the most effective ways to identify risk factors before a tragedy occurs.
“Last summer, our son Jack attended a heart screening at the Edwardsville YMCA. He was healthy and active and had always received a clean bill of health at every yearly physical,” says Jack’s mom, Lisa.
“There were never any symptoms, no red flags, and no concerns that would have led us to believe anything was wrong with his heart. For a small dollar amount and about 20 minutes of our time, we assumed it would simply confirm what we already believed: that Jack was perfectly healthy.”
“Instead, that screening set us on a journey we never expected, and one we are now profoundly thankful for…Jack will turn 13 in March, and today he’s healing, thriving, and looking forward to getting back to the things he loves – thanks to this program.”
Organizers hope the event will encourage families to take proactive steps to protect their children’s health and increase awareness about the importance of cardiac screening among young people.
