Spencer Homes Male Athletes Of Month: The Edwardsville Boys Tennis Squad Has Outstanding Season Once Again

Multiple players once again qualify for state and excel there under Head Coach Dave Lipe.

EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville advanced multiple players to the IHSA 2A State Boys Tennis tournament after winning a sectional title, and its competitors also had strong outings in singles and doubles play during state tournament action.

The Tigers were represented at state in singles by Jake Brinker and Brandon Wong and in doubles by Schaefer Bates and Isaac Chieboun, along with John Almos and Lucas Rudd. Early in the state tournament, Bates and Chieboun posted two decisive wins in the doubles championship bracket before falling in the next round, while Brinker and Wong each won a singles match.

The Edwardsville boys state tennis qualifiers are Spencer Homes Male Athletes of the Month.

In the doubles championship bracket, Edwardsville’s Isaac Chieboun and Schaefer Bates defeated Charles Murray and Neel Patel 6-0, 6-0, then beat Owen Keyser and Noah Polansky of Evanston Township 6-1, 6-1. Their run ended with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Shay Sweigard and Nolan Pavik of LaGrange Lyons.

In the singles championship bracket, Edwardsville freshman sensation Jake Brinker defeated Kalvin Wolff of Batavia 6-1, 6-2 in IHSA 2A State Boys Tennis competition. Brinker then lost to Feriyadi Hansnovi of Chicago Lane 6-0, 6-0. In singles consolation, Brinker lost to Finn Talbot of Lombard 6-3, 6-2.

Brandon Wong also won a singles match, defeating Mathieu Fosse of Winnetka New Trier 6-1, 6-7 (3), 10-7. Wong then lost to Daniel Nathan of Peoria Richwoods 6-0, 1-6, 10-8, and later lost in consolation to Brother Rice.

In doubles play, Lucas Rudd and John Almos lost to Ryan Roumenov and Koko Dimitrakos of Downers Grove South 6-4, 2-6, 12-10. The provided results state that Rudd and Almos dropped both of their doubles matches.

Edwardsville head coach Dave Lipe praised the team’s season.

“This team did a lot of amazing things this year,” Lipe said.

Lipe also said the Tigers won the Glenbard West and Hersey Tournament, sectional and conference titles, and did not lose a match in conference play all season. He said the team lost only one match at the sectional while qualifying all six players for state.
