East St. Louis' Skyler Wood and Jahzara Singleton Make Flag Football History
After the first year of girls flag football at East St. Louis Senior High, Skyler Wood and Jahzara Singleton are taking a historic next step at Millikin University.
EAST ST. LOUIS - Two East St. Louis Senior High School wide receivers, Skyler Wood and Jahzara Singleton, have earned full-ride scholarships to Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, after the first year of the girls flag football program at their high school, marking a milestone for the newly established sport.

Wood and Singleton, members of the East St. Louis Senior High School Flyerettes Flag Football Team, are set to join the inaugural girls flag football program at Millikin. Their signings come as East St. Louis School District 189 and coach Andrea Rucker recognized the pair for continuing both their athletic and academic careers.
“Congrats, ladies, on your commitment to Millikin to continue playing Flag Football and continuing your education,” Coach Rucker said.
In a statement, East St. Louis School District 189 said Wood and Singleton “have made history by earning full-ride scholarships to Millikin University.”
“Their dedication, hard work, and perseverance have opened the door to an exciting new chapter, and we couldn't be prouder of all they've accomplished,” the district said. “This incredible milestone is a testament to their commitment both on and off the field, and they continue to inspire the next generation of Flyerettes and East St. Louis students.”
The district said the achievement followed the first year of the girls flag football program at East St. Louis Senior High School in 2026 and described it as a significant moment for the sport at the school.
Wood plans to major in business management, while Singleton intends to major in elementary education.
The two will attend Millikin as roommates and contribute their skills to the university’s debut girls flag football program.
