Litchfield Man Charged After Gillespie Burglary Investigation
Macoupin County prosecutors filed multiple felony charges after a July 7 incident in Gillespie. The case centers on allegations involving a home and two Chevrolet trucks.
GILLESPIE - A Litchfield man was charged July 8, 2026, by the Macoupin County State’s Attorney’s Office with residential burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and attempted possession of a stolen vehicle in connection with an incident a day earlier in Gillespie, according to the Gillespie Police Department.

David W. Hammann, 39, of Litchfield, was charged with one count of Residential Burglary (Class 1 Felony; Not Eligible for Probation), one count of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle (Class 2 Felony), and one count of Attempted Possession of a Stolen Vehicle (Class 3 Felony).
According to the police department, the charges stem from allegations that on July 7, 2026, Hammann knowingly and without authority remained in a dwelling in the 200 block of East Wilson Street in Gillespie with the intent to commit a theft.
Police said Hammann is also accused of possessing a white 2019 Chevrolet truck, knowing it had been stolen.
He is further accused of attempting to possess a white 2011 Chevrolet truck knowing it had been stolen, police said.
The Gillespie Police Department said the charges in the case are based solely on probable cause and do not indicate guilt. Police said Hammann, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
