Don't miss our top stories and need-to-know news everyday in your inbox.
For her kindness, Elena Spence is a Student of the Month for the Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7.
Spence is a fifth grader at Columbus. She loves math, especially as she becomes more comfortable using area models to solve double-digit multiplication problems. This used to challenge her, but she decided to keep trying. Now, she is a pro.
Spence enjoys problem-solving and puzzles. She completes sudoku puzzles every morning. She enjoys these experiences because they “help [her] brain adapt and help [her] learn.” Spence always pushes herself academically and regularly exceeds expectations.
Even in her free time, Spence enjoys trying new things. She loves to write.
“I like to write books and I love to play pickleball,” she shared. “Right now, I’m working on a fantasy and adventure story. I think I might write a scary book next. I also like to play the violin.”
At school, Spence is known for helping others. She once helped a friend who fell in gym class, and she regularly holds the door open for her classmates and assists her teacher when he’s cleaning the classroom.
Her teacher, Rob Canada, noted that Spence is an important member of their class. He is proud of Spence and certain she will go on to do great things.
“Elena is a quiet leader. She always does the right thing,” he said. “She is kind to everyone and seems to always notice if someone might be having a bad day. Every class needs an Elena.”
Congratulations to Elena for this recognition by the Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7!
