Wallace Throws Two Touchdown Passes, Shapiro Scores Twice, Edwardsville Finishes Regular Season Undefeated With 19-0 Win Over Mascoutah
The Tigers shut out Mascoutah 19-0 at Tiger Stadium to reach 13-0, setting the stage for a home playoff opener against Alton.
EDWARDSVILLE - Quarterback Ella Wallace threw for two touchdowns, one to Sophie Shapiro, who scored twice, and another to Stella Worman, while the defense held Mascoutah off the board, as Edwardsville's girls flag football team finished the regular season undefeated with a 19-0 win over the Indians in the regular season finale Monday night at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers end the regular season undefeated at 13-0, and get ready for the IHSA playoffs, which begins with their own regional Tuesday evening against Alton. Edwardsville was seeded second behind Champaign Central in the Belleville East sectional complex.

It was also Senior Night, and in the annual pregame ceremonies, the senior players --- Sophie Antonini, Ashia Teague, Sophie Shapiro, Aleigha Fazio, Zinnia Allen, Maksine Straub, Geeta Janardhan, Kennedy Gieseking, and Vickie White --- and their families were all saluted, honored, and thanked for all of their contributions to the program's success.
"It was a great Senior Night," said Edwardsville head coach Taylor Hay. "We have Alton tomorrow. The playoffs are another season, and anything can happen. We have to stand up and rise to the occasion."
All of the scoring occurred in the first half. In the opening quarter, Teague hit Sophie Shapiro from 15 yards out for the Tigers' first touchdown, then later in the period, Wallace hit Shapiro from 40 yards for another score, but the conversions went awry, leaving the Tigers up 12-0 after the first quarter.
The only score of the second quarter happened when Wallace passed 20 yards for the touchdown, and Gieseking caught the conversion pass in the end zone to make the score 19-0. The Tigers' defense did the rest, not allowing Mascoutah to come close to the end zone as Edwardsville preserved the 19-0 win to finish undefeated.
Edwardsville finishes the regular season 13-0, and plays the Redbirds in the quarterfinals of their regional Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. at home. A win sends them to the first semifinal Oct. 5 at 5 p.m., against the winner of Peoria Central and Belleville West, who meet each other at 7 p.m. The second set of the quarterfinals takes place Wednesday night, with Belleville West meeting Peoria Manual at 5 p.m., and East St. Louis going against Champaign Centennial at 7 p.m.
The semifinals are set for 5 and 7 p.m. Oct. 5, with the final to be played Oct. 7 at 6 p.m., The regional winner moves on to the East sectional at Charlie Woodford Field, where they'll meet the Peoria Richwoods winner in the sectional semifinal at 10 a.m., while the winners at Bradley-Bourbonnais and Joliet Central clash at 12 noon. The semifinal winners play in the sectional final Oct. 13 at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Indians finish up at 7-5, and play at Richwoods against Danville Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner faces the winner of the host Knights and Hillsboro in the second semifinal Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. The final is set for Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.
The East sectional winner plays in the fourth quarterfinal at the state tournament at Willowbrook High in Villa Park Oct. 16 at 7:46 p.m. against the LaGrange Lyons sectional champion. The state semifinals are scheduled for Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. and 12 noon, with the third-place game going off at 2:30 p.m., and the state final set for 5 p.m.
