ALTON - Alton’s Landon Mayer secured the final state qualifying spot on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, after a six-hole playoff at the Lockport Sectional, advancing to the Class 3A IHSA boys golf state finals for the second time.
Mayer finished ninth with a 73 and will compete Friday, Oct. 10, 2026, at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington. His qualification marks the fourth consecutive year an Alton boys golfer has advanced to state.

Landon Mayer is an Eardley Agency LLC Male Athlete of the Month for Alton High.
The Redbirds finished seventh as a team with a score of 313. Donavan Ducey shot a 77, followed by Lucas Davis with an 81, Jack Puent with an 82, Bryaden Buchan with an 83 and Hudson Dorris with an 86.
Mayer has played varsity golf since midway through his freshman season. His mother, Emily Smith, said he developed a love for golf at a young age. Although he played several other sports growing up, golf remained his favorite.
As he has gotten older, Mayer has shared that interest with his younger brothers, teaching them and encouraging them to play, Smith said.
Smith credited his coaches, family, teammates, and friends with supporting him throughout the years and expressed pride in his performance at sectionals.
Mayer hopes to continue playing golf in college, Smith said, and that he views a strong performance at state as another step toward that goal.
