Rives and teammate Oliver Franz were the first golfers in school history to represent the Lions at a sectional tournament. They competed in a field of 112 golfers from across Southern Illinois.
After a double bogey on his opening hole, Rives played the remaining 17 holes at 4 over par. He shot 38 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine.
Franz finished tied for 45th with an 89, shooting 44 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine. He did not advance to state.
The school described the sectional appearance, Rives’ All-Sectional honor and both boys' sectional performances as milestones for its golf program.
The Lions have eight sophomores and two freshmen returning next season, along with middle school golfers, the school's golf coaches said, so the future looks very bright for Maryville Christian golf.
