“Southern Illinois has always played an important role in keeping America’s economy moving, and our railroads are a big part of that,” said Bost. “Whether it’s moving coal, agricultural products, or other critical materials, our businesses depend on safe and reliable transportation to get the job done. I’m proud to see this investment coming to our region because it means stronger infrastructure, safer rail operations, and more opportunities for the hardworking folks who call Southern Illinois home. I’ll keep working to make sure our communities have the resources they need to grow and succeed.”

The funding, awarded through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program, will support major upgrades to the railway’s tracks, equipment, and maintenance facilities. The improvements will strengthen rail safety, improve service reliability, and support the efficient transportation of American-made energy products throughout the region.

The project will include replacing rail and ties, installing hot bearing detectors to identify potential equipment failures, constructing a new locomotive maintenance facility, and rehabilitating 12 locomotives. These improvements will help modernize the short-line railroad, reduce the risk of equipment failures, and ensure more dependable freight service for businesses throughout Southern Illinois and Southwestern Indiana.
