Coy became the principal of Eunice Smith last year. She noted that the school has grown a lot in the past few years as the teachers and staff get to know one another and come together to support students.
“We have such fun teachers here and then, obviously, just a great group of kiddos,” she said.
Eunice Smith serves kids in kindergarten through second grade, and, Coy said, “it’s absolutely adorable.” She loves engaging these kids and watching them learn every day.
Coy shared that she wasn’t the only new face at Eunice Smith last year, so it was important for her and her staff to build the school’s culture of belonging. With several new teachers in the building, they worked hard to develop a culture where kids and staff members knew they were supported at all times.
“Last year, our focus was building our culture. That’s really what we did. We got to know each other. We made time for each other,” Coy remembered. “I’ve always been an open door. My door is open all the time. And I want people to know, they can come to me whenever they need anything. I want them to know I support them.”
This mindset has guided Coy as she leads Eunice Smith. She is grateful to the Alton Community Unit School District #11 for their similar mission of supporting kids, teachers, administrators and families. She also gave a special shoutout to the district’s “really good” Board of Education.
As Coy prepares for the end of the fall semester, she is looking forward to more fun and excitement at Eunice Smith. Her team is eager to support the kids and help them grow, and she is proud to lead that charge.
