Members of the Godfrey Finance Committee and Village Board unanimously agreed on Nov. 4, 2026 to solicit a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for contractors to perform “design-build services for additional turf sports fields at Glazebrook Park.”
Trustee Gerard Fischer said this has been a “hot discussion” following conversations with the Irish Soccer Club, Marquette Catholic High School and Lewis and Clark Community College. He sees the potential new turf fields as a way to draw student-athletes to Godfrey.
“Flag football is something that’s very popular right now,” Fischer said. “I know Marquette has talked about, they could do some flag football, bring them in as a girls’ sport. Lewis and Clark has talked about, possibly, that they could also do that as a club sport for flag football.”
Fischer suggested two new turf fields – one striped for soccer, football and lacrosse, and another striped for soccer and football. After speaking with representatives of both schools and the soccer club, Fischer said if the village goes through with its RFQ for two turf fields at Glazebook, the other groups will seek their own RFQ for a new soccer field at Lewis and Clark suitable for hosting championship games.
“Then we would have four fields in Glazebrook [and] one over in Lewis and Clark,” Fischer said. “When we have tournaments or leagues or whatever, we would now have a ‘championship’ field … and can have championship games at Lewis and Clark.”
Irish Soccer Club Founder Robert Stephan said the fields at Gordon Moore are used by teams from across the greater Riverbend region, highlighting the park’s importance as a sports tourism destination. Adding two more turf fields would allow the village to host even more games, he said.
“You might have a team from Quincy play a team from Chesterfield,” Stephan said. “They’re coming into your community, they’re going to your restaurants, they’re going to your gas stations [and] spending money here.”
